about us
the need
Self-determination is integral to the health and happiness of all individuals. There are three main components to self-determination: ¹
Autonomy
Competence
Relatedness
All three areas are at-risk for individuals with disabilities, as our built environment and cultural norms consistently disenfranchise individuals who are not “typical.” The lack of adaptive environments and products hinders an individual’s ability to perform daily tasks independently, from dressing to transportation. This lack of autonomy can lead to a feeling of reduced competence, both for the individual and as perceived by the community. Finally, the pervasive lack of accessibility interferes with the creation of strong interpersonal bonds and community integration.
